APA In-Text Citations

A work by two authors: Name both authors in the parentheses using an ampersand between the authors’ names each time you cite the work.  

• Research supports this conclusion (Wegner & Petty, 1994).

A work by three to five authors: List all the authors in the parentheses the first time you cite the source. 

• (Kernis, Cornell, Sun, Berry, & Harlow, 1993)

In subsequent citations, only use the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” in the parentheses. 

• (Kernis et al., 1993)

Six or more authors: Use the first author’s name followed by et al. in the parentheses.

APA Quiz Review

1. What would an in-text citation include when the author of a source is unknown?

It would include the first few words of the Reference list entry of that work and the year. It would only include the word anonymous if the work's author is stated as anonymous.
