Follow the instructions listed in your article/chapter summary instructions (including all three sections listed therein, including “general instructions”, “substantive instructions for lit review summaries”, and “substantive instructions for methods articles” sections) in order to write a summary of this article below. When writing it, do so with any eye towards describing Connolly and Healy’s comparative findings—by age bands and identity (in their case, sectarian Catholic and Protestant identity). Finally, compare and contrast the research methods they use to study children from those used by both Piaget and Weil, and Jahoda.

Article/Chapter Summary

This article presents a study for children ages 3 to 11 in Northern Ireland. A main point of the study was to get children to express their emotions for the conflictions of their homeland. Once being presented with the findings to the study, researchers wanted to examine, compare and contrast the attitudes and identities of children by giving the children an analysis of their previous living standards. There were three age groups presented in the study (3-4, 7-8, 10-11 years). There were approximately 276 interviews, among the groups of children. The interviews were not structured and children could express any issues they preferred to elaborate on. More importantly, the study is based upon two different case studies. One case regards children living under the shadow of sectarian violence. The other case study is the children living relatively free from sectarian violence. Contrasting the two case studies, children who lived under the shadow sectarian violence had more limitations to resources as a child. Being exposed to violence, the 3 to 4 year old group had tendencies of re- enacting violent activity. Even in the other age groups of children who very living under the shadow of sectarian violence, children seem to have gained more political and local event knowledge. There was a survey showing the differentiation in cultural practices among Catholics and Protestant 3 year olds. Keeping in mind the children’s attitudes and perspectives, the Catholics had a higher percentage in votes when being asked if they liked the Orange Marchers and police and if they prefer the Irish tricolour flag.

Looking at the big picture of the study, the findings have presented accurate evidence on the range of children’s experiences and how some children’s attitudes and identities usually progress and alter with age. Being mentioned in the article, “the forms of ethnic habitus outlined for the two groups of children are only meant to reflect the general ways in which the children in these specific areas tend to develop their sense of ethnic identity.” (P. 103) Looking at the research methods of both Piaget and Weil and Jahoda, Healy’s study can relate if some sort. All of the studies used age groups that were depended upon the Piaget’s Stages of Development. Piaget and Weil and Jahoda’s research methods involved children having more of a lead to verbally and physically be more expressive. All of the research methods used a technique to determine and test the children’s knowledge on local and political identity. Most importantly, the research methods involved two different groups of children, as one group being exposed to limited resources as a child and the other group having access to more tools of education. The findings from the research methods validated researchers for further investigation. Researchers were able to determine relations and changes in children’s attitudes and identities.
