WIG Checklist – Did you get it right?

Check off each item to ensure your Team Wigs and lag measures meet the standard.

NRFA = Not Required for Assignment

_NRFA_ Have you gathered rich input both top down and bottom up?

_X_ Will the Team WIG have a clear, predictable impact on the overall organization WIG or strategy, not just on team performance?

_X_ Is the Team WIG the most impactful thing the team can do to drive achievement of the overall WIG?

_X_ Does the team clearly have the power to achieve the WIG without heavy dependence on other teams?

_X_ Does the WIG require the focus of the entire team, not just of the leader of the subgroup?

_X_ Is the lag measure written in the format “from X to Y by When”?

_X_ Can the WIG be simplified any further? Does it start with a simple verb and end with a clear lag measure?

Discipline 2: Act on the Lead Measures

Please use the lead measure builder to identify lead measures for your WIG which are predictive (i.e., measures something that leads to the WIG), and influenceable (i.e., something your team can influence).

Lead Measure Builder

  1. Brainstorm at least four ideas for lead measures. Add rows as needed for more lead measures.
  2. Brainstorm methods for measuring those ideas.
  3. Rank in order of impact on the WIG.
  4. Test your ideas against the checklist.
  5. Write your final lead measures.

Final Lead Measures:

Lead Measure Checklist - Did you get it right?

Check off each item to ensure your team Lead Measures will move the lag measure of the WIG:

_X_Are the lead measures predictive—the most impactful things the team can do to drive achievement of the Team WIG?

__Is the time frame for the lead measures less than or equal to one week?

__Are the lead measures influenceable—does the team clearly have the power to move the lead measure?

_X_Is it an ongoing process, or “once and done”?

_X_Is it a team game (not a leader’s game)?

_NRFA_Have you gathered rich input on the lead measures from the team and others?

_X_Are the lead measures truly measurable? Can you track performance on the lead measures form day one?

_X_Are the lead measures worth pursuing? Or will the data cost more to gather than it is worth? Will these measures lead to unintended consequences?

_X_Is every measure quantified and/or qualified to clarify how much/often/consistently/well the team is supposed to perform?

_X_Does each lead measure start with a verb?

_X_Is each lead measure simple?

Discipline 3: Keep a Compelling Scoreboard

Please use the Scoreboard Builder to create a scoreboard which indicates where your team is and where you need to be, then test your scoreboard ideas against the checklist. Make up hypothetical data for your scoreboard to display how it would look if your team is falling behind halfway through the allotted timeframe.

Scoreboard Checklist – Did you get it right?

Check off each item to ensure that the team scoreboard is compelling and will drive high performance:

_ NRFA_ Has the team been closely involved in creating the scoreboard?

__ Does the scoreboard track the Team WIG, lag measures, and lead measures?

__ Is there a full explanation of the WIG and measures along with the graphs?

__ Does every graph display both actual results & target results (Where are we now? Where should we be?)?

__ Can we tell at a glance on every measure if we’re winning or losing?

_ NRFA_ Is the scoreboard posted in a highly visible location where the team can see it easily and often?

__ Is the scoreboard easy to update?

__ Is the scoreboard personalized – a unique expression of the team?

Discipline 4: Create a Cadence of Accountability

Assume your team is reviewing the data from the scoreboard you developed in discipline 3 (i.e., you are currently halfway through the time allotted for the WIG). Please use the WIG session agenda tool to complete a mock WIG Session, update your scoreboard from discipline 3 by adding one more week of performance, then check the WIG Session against the criteria in the checklist.
