EXAM 1

ECEN 322

Problem 1

A generator with a 50-ohm ineernal impedance and a voltage source vr (t) 220 sin(6T x 108 t) volt is connected to a load of 15+j50 ohm through a 26-cm section of a lossless, 50-ohm transmission line using an insulating material with a dielectric constant of 2.25. Determine: (a) input impedance of the transmission line with the load attached (in Cartesian form),

(b) Vo+ (i.e., the complex amplitude of the forward-propagating voltage wave, in polar form), (c) the load current (phasor, in polar form), and (d) time-average power delivered to the load.

Problem 2 [Smith Chart]

Measurements on a 50 — O slotted line indicate that S = 2.6, the distance between successive voltage is 48 cm, and the first voltage minimum is located 15.6 cm from the load. Use the

Smith chart to determine:

  • load impedance and
  • input impedance 77 cm from the load.

[Note: Mark all important points on the chart and explain, step by step, your solution procedure.]

Problem 3 [Smith Chart]

Design a stub tuner that matches a ZL = 40+j40 Q to a 50-ohm transmission line using the shortest possible short-circuited stub that has the same characteristic impedance as the transmission line. The dielectric constant of the insulation is er = 2.25 for both the stub and the feed line and the frequency is f = 2 GHz.

[Note: Mark all important points on the chart and explain, step by step, your solution procedure. Express the design dimensions in cm.]
