The challenge questions are provided to allow independent, unguided work, like what you will encounter in a real situation. You should aim to improve your skills by getting the correct answer in as few steps as possible. Use screen captures in your lab document where possible to illustrate your answers.
Analysis and Discussion
Explain how an appliance firewall, such as pfSense, might be a better fit for a large enterprise than an operating system-specific firewall, such as Windows Firewall.
You should recognize that Microsoft firewalls is an operating system specific firewall for a single host whereas an appliance firewall will work for the entire network of computers, regardless of the operating system, and will have granular control of connections.
Tools and Commands
Launch the pfSense firewall and make a screen capture showing the log of your activity.
Challenge Exercise
In Section 2 of the lab, you created a rule allowing RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) traffic to pass to TargetWindows02 and opened a remote connection to that machine. For this challenge, use that RDP connection to open the IIS web page for the vWorkstation (http://172.30.0.2) in a browser window and make a screen capture showing that web page. Use screen captures to document any changes you make to the firewall. Recall, you will need to add a route to direct traffic back into the vWorkstation. If you have not already done so, you should complete Section 2 before working on this challenge exercise.
In Section 2, you created a new LAN rule for remote desktop protocol, RDP in to TargetWindows02. In this challenge, you will need to create a new WAN rule to allow HTTP traffic from TargetWindows02. In addition, you will need to open a command prompt window on TargetWindows02 to add a route for the traffic (route add 172.30.0.0 mask 255.255.255.0 10.20.1.1) before opening the web page in the browser.
