HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT CAPSTONE
Competency 981.1.1: Capstone -
The graduate integrates and synthesizes competencies from across the
degree program and thereby demonstrates the ability to participate in
and contribute value to the chosen professional field.
Task 1: Research Topic in HIM
Introduction:
For this task, you will develop the following elements for your capstone:
an introduction to your capstone, the problem you are addressing, the
reason you selected your chosen topic within the field of health
information management (HIM) for research or review, a literature review,
and a preliminary reference list (based on your literature review). This
task will help you launch your capstone, think about the rationale for your
choice of topic or project, and research what others in the field of HIM
have written about your chosen topic. You will then expand on your topic in
this task by developing a list of references (including appendices) and
writing an abstract. For a list of appropriate topics, see the course of
study.
Requirements:
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined
total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one
individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from
sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report
available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.
You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission
because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate
your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one
rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to
relevant portions of the course.
The Capstone is required to be in Narrative format. In other words, if you use bullets, to show your main points under any of the rubrics, be sure to well-explain your ideas.
Before you begin the Capstone, has your topic been approved by your Capstone Advisor (Course Instructor)? If not, be sure to get the approval before you begin.
A. Develop an introduction for your capstone (suggested length of 4–6 pages) in which you:
1. Describe your chosen topic within the field of HIM.
2. Explain why you chose the topic.
3. Explain why you chose your research methodology (e.g., case study, meta-analysis of data).
All students use meta-analysis as your research methodology, because of writing the Literature Review. Here is a useful website that has the definition of meta-analysis. (see below) You may also discuss other research methodologies if you feel they are appropriate, but always include meta-analysis. https://guides.library.bloomu.edu/litreview
4. Discuss why the topic is important to the field of HIM.
B. Explain the problem (suggested length of 3–5 pages) within the
field of HIM your project will address by doing the following:
Note: You may choose to refer to your sources to support your
explanations.
1. Explain the problem related to your selected topic.
Be sure to include how your topic is relevant and specific to HIM.
2. Describe background information about the problem.
As you describe the background information (history, legislation, other ideas that show how this topic evolved) be sure to discuss how it is relevant to HIM and support your ideas with outside sources (perhaps use some information from your Lit Review). You are required to support your ideas with 2 or more outside sources.
3. Discuss possible causes of the problem.
For this rubric, you are also required to support your ides with outside sources: 2 or more.
4. Explain why an examination of this problem is important to the field of
HIM.
C. Create a literature review by doing the following:
Your selected sources should be from within the past three years. Online magazines, webpages, journals, articles, other documents all acceptable. Blog posts are not acceptable.
1. Summarize 10- 15 professional sources relevant to the topic you have chosen.
2. Explain how each of the professional sources applies to the topic being investigated
3. Explain how all 10 sources collectively support the chosen topic.
This is separate from C1, C2: it is a ‘summary of your summaries’. I have attached an example.
D. Submit the email containing the completed Human Subjects FAQ Quiz, which demonstrates that you have read and understood the “Human Subjects FAQ.”
The Human Subjects Quiz must be submitted as an additional document to
Task One. You can find it in the course of study.
E. Assess whether the capstone proposal complies with IRB standards for exemption status.
If you are performing research on vulnerable populations (children, prison inmates, people with mental health issues) you are required to obtain IRB approval.
Note: If you would like your proposed project to have an IRB review,
make those arrangements with your course mentor and the IRB.
F. Acknowledge sources, using APA-formatted in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
All sources used in the Literature Review must be listed in your
References list, along with any other sources you may have cited in the
body of your paper. Evaluators will do a cross-check of all References
listed, to see if you cited the Reference in the body of your work.
G. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
