Sustainability

In 2005, the World Summit on Social Development identified three core areas that contribute to the philosophy and social science of sustainable development:

1. Economic development
2. Social development
3. Environmental protection

These “pillars” form the backbone of many national standards and certification schemes that are used to tackle the core issues the world now faces. In essence, it is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We must consider the future then, in making our decisions about the present. For our purposes in BUSN104, we will focus on the economic development of our local councils. Economic development is the issue that proves the most problematic as most people disagree on political ideology what is and is not economically sound, as well as how it will affect businesses and by extension, jobs and employability. This pillar is also about providing incentives for businesses and other organisations to adhere to sustainability guidelines beyond their normal legislative requirements. Additionally, it aims to encourage and foster incentives for the average person to do their bit where and when they can–one person can rarely achieve much, but taken as a group, effects in some areas are cumulative. The supply-and-demand market is consumerist in nature and modern life requires a significant amount of resources every single day. For the sake of the environment, getting what we consume under control is the paramount issue. Economic development is about giving people what they want without compromising quality of life, especially in the developing world, and reducing the financial burden and “red tape” of doing the right thing.

Instructions:

You must form a group of 3 – 4 students from your own workshop. If you are unable to find a group, contact your lecturer before the end of week 4–your lecturer will assign you to a group. You CANNOT complete this assignment without being in a group. If you submit your assignment without being in a group, you will receive zero for your submission.

As a group, you must choose a council from the state lists included in Appendix 1. Melbourne students are to choose from the list of councils in Victoria; Sydney students are to choose from the list of councils in NSW and Brisbane students are to choose a council from the QLD list of councils. You have until the end of week 4 to notify your lecturer which council you have chosen. You cannot choose a council that has already been chosen by another group. If you have your lecturer will advise you to choose another. If you do not advise your lecturer of your chosen council, and you choose a council that has been approved to another student, you will receive zero for your submission.

Once your group and council have been established, each member in the group must write an essay that answers ONE of the questions below. You cannot all answer the same question.

1. What is your council doing to ensure sustainable economic growth while promoting jobs and stronger economies?
2. What is your council doing to ensure the health of the land, air and local waterways in its catchment?
3. Is your council involved in any innovative economic sustainability applications that could assist its local catchment?
4. Following your review of your council’s current sustainability plan, what are the main economic impediments to your council becoming a sustainable council? What are some ideas of potential sustainable economic solutions that it does not currently do?
5. Explain, in economic terms, any features or issues associated with your Council’s urban environment that could affect the sustainability of its non-urban environment and vice versa. That is, also explain any features or your council’s non-urban environment that could affect the urban environment.

Once your group has chosen a council, your group will need to investigate the council’s website and documentation, including the council’s annual report, in order to answer the questions above. Your group will also have to research books, journal articles and other relevant sources that will assist each of you within the group to answer the questions you have individually chosen. You must upload the council’s annual report (and its sustainability report if available) with your essay when you submit to turnitin (each student within a group must do this).

Although it is an individual submission, you will need to work collaboratively in your student group to formulate your essay answers. Each student within the group must answer a different question. It must be evident by your submission that you have worked collaboratively with group

members to answer your individual question, that is, your group’s answers to the chosen questions will provide a cohesive whole to your councils sustainability efforts in relation to the ‘Economic Development Pillar’.

You must individually submit your own essay (and annual report) through Turnitin at the submission point under the Assignment 1 tile on LEO.

Please note specific presentation requirements for each student:

• Your essay should include a cover page which needs to include the following information:
• Student name and number
• Group member names
• Campus and lecturer name
• Assignment name (Assignment 1)
• Council name and State
• Semester 1 2018
• Answer your chosen question on a new page in the form of an essay.
• You may use sub-headings should they be required.
• Numbered appendices (as required), and
• Labelled tables and graphs (if used).
• The assignment is to be referenced, and a reference list is essential.
• Use Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12.
• Double line spaced
• Your essay answer is limited to 2000 (+/- 5%) words per question and anything longer than this will be penalised.
• The reference list, tables, figures and any appendices are not included in the page count.
• Please ensure you upload a copy of the council’s annual report (and sustainability report if available) to turnitin along with your essay submission; you will lose valuable marks if it is not also loaded.
• Ensure you read the rubric below (appendix 2) thoroughly. It has further information on requirements.

In marking your essay, your lecturer will compare the information you have provided with that of your group members to ensure consistency.
