Transportation Engineering Project

Project Topic:

Two roundabouts behind the AUD are struggling with severe traffic congestions during the peak hour due to high traffic demand and/or improper intersection control. To improve a level of the service on these two intersections, the students are required to come up with solutions to provide better traffic flow behind the AUD. The existing buildings and facilities should be carefully considered on any modification, but it is allowed to modify sidewalks and use empty land on the roadway.

Project Requirements:

  1. Each group will have three students. Each student is expected to contribute equally to the project. Although a specific task is assigned to the student, each student must understand the details of the entire project.
  2. The proposed solutions or alternatives should sound professional and practical.
    1. Describe background and problem statements on the project site and current problems of the site.
    2. Locate the considered site and describe existing traffic conditions and geometries considering all relevant design factors.
    3. Provide at least three alternatives and select the best alternative based on engineering analysis. The professional drawing (top-view and cross section of the roadways and/or intersections) is required for the final design, and the rough drawing for the alternatives should be provided as well.
    4. Discuss global impacts of your alternative(s) on society, economy, and environment. Show how you address these factors to select your final design.
    5. Describe professional and ethical obligations related to your final design/solution.
    6. Provide any suggestion to improve traffic systems on the project site from transport policy perspective in case that the budget is not available for investment on roadway project.
  3. You must use both Sidra and Synchro (or Vissim).
  4. Please follow proper design manuals or references on the project report.
  5. Prepare a project report that does not exceed 20 pages. There is no page limit for appendices.

Report Preparation:

The final report must include (but not limited to) the following:

  1. Table of Contents: It should contain the report’s headings, and the pages they are Do not prepare a separate List of Tables and List of Figures.
  2. Introduction: It should describe backgrounds, problem statements, objectives of the project, and approaches
  3. Existing conditions & constrains: Describe the current status of the project, environment, existing infrastructures/systems, constraints, and details on
  4. Analysis of the existing traffic conditions: Perform the traffic data analysis and discuss the reasons of the traffic problems on the
  5. Alternatives and suggested design: Describe design of new infrastructure or systems or modification of existing ones with the clear escriptions on the alternatives. Perform the engineering analysis to determine the final design including analysis results and professional drawings.
  6. Impact of the design: Discuss the impact of the final design on the society, economy, and environment and describe how you address these factors on the final design. Describe professional and ethical obligations related to your final design/solution.
  7. Conclusions: State any related conclusions upon work
  8. Recommendations: State any related recommendations based on your proposed solutions or suggestions. Provide any suggestion to improve traffic systems on the project site from transport policy perspective in case that the budget is not available for investment on roadway project.
  9. References: Please add references at the end of main body of the report. Try to use any reference management software (e.g. Mendeley, Refwork).
  10. Appendix Section: This should include any row materials or data that are not appropriate to be listed within the body of the report.

References:

  1. The reference list should contain only references that are cited in the text, numbered in the order in which they are first cited. Bibliographic lists will not be published.
  2. Denote a reference at the appropriate place in the text with an italicized Arabic numeral in squared parentheses, e.g., [2]. Do not denote text references with superscripts.
  3. Do not include in the reference list personal communications, telephone conversations, or similar material that would not be available to readers electronically or in printed form in a library or from the originating agency. Instead cite the unpublished work in the text and parentheses. enclose the author’s name along with the term “unpublished data” in parentheses.
  4. Do not repeat a reference in the list, and do not use ibid., idem, op. cit., or loc. cit. If a reference is cited more than once in the text, repeat the number first assigned to the reference.
  5. Use the consistent reference styles. It is recommended to use citation software (e.g. EndNote or Mendeley)
