INFSCI 1022 Final Project

Deliverable One

Identify and model all entities, corresponding attributes, primary keys, foreign keys, and their relationships in the Rockbridge Outfitters case by developing an entity-relationship (E-R) diagram using MS Visio.  Make sure cardinalities are mentioned for each relation and solve any many-to-many relationships (add new table breaking the many-to-many relationship as needed). Consider the database to be in third normal form (3NF).

Include the Honors Pledge with electronic signatures and date the assignment was completed.

Submit a document that includes names of all group members (listed alphabetically by last name), course title and name, professor’s name, and date of completion.  The document should include the ERD (pdf) and normalized relations using shorthand notation. All of this should be in one file.

Deliverable Two

Revise the previous E-R diagram (if needed). Create all tables and populate them with data in SQL Server. Provide details for each attribute including data type, field size, required or not, and so on. This is considered to be a data dictionary

Include the Honors Pledge with electronic signatures and date the assignment was completed.

Submit a document that includes names of all group members (listed alphabetically by last name), course title and name, professor’s name, and date of completion.  The document should include the revised E-R diagram (if necessary) and printouts of the tables with data.  Additionally, provide the data dictionary.

Deliverable Three

  1. Create queries 1-21 as provided in the Rockbridge Outfitters case in SQL Server.
  2. Create the input and application forms and all reports using MS Access by creating an ODBC connection to the database in SQL Server.

Include the Honors Pledge with electronic signatures and date the assignment was completed.

Submit a document that includes names of all group members (listed alphabetically by last name), course title and name, professor’s name, and date of completion. The document should include output from all queries, screen shots of all forms and reports. Each query, form, and report should be labeled correctly.

Final Report

The final report (submitted as a hard copy and electronically in Blackboard) must include the following items:

  1. Cover page with names of group members (listed alphabetically by last name, course number and title, professor’s name, date)
  2. ERD and Normalization
  3. Data dictionary – list of attributes in each table along with field size, primary key or foreign key, description, required or not required
  4. Printouts (may need to set printing to landscape orientation)
    1. Queries 1-21 (each query should fit on a single page)
    2. Input and Application Forms (each form should fit on a single page)
    3. Reports (each report should fit on a single page)
  5. MS Access file will be uploaded in either Box or Blackboard (to be determined).

Project Grading

Each student’s grade will be based on your project grade (80%) and your groups evaluation of your contribution (20%).  Once the projects are submitted, a peer evaluation form will be distributed in class.  So, all group members may not get the same final grade on the project.  You will evaluate yourself as well!

Each group must work individually and under no circumstances will you share ideas with other groups.
