Introduction: The continuous feeling of sadness, loss of interest from everything and a moody disorder is called as depression. The feeling continue to the sadness, always feeling down and having no pleasure in life is even worse and need to be treated by psychiatric. The age group who are affected are children as well as adults. The time period may vary from some weeks to several months and even some years also.

Symptoms: The symptoms include

  • Feeling depressed.
  • Lack of interest in any work.
  • Loss of interest in sexual desire.
  • Weight loss or gain unintentionally.
  • Sleeping habit changed too much to too little.
  • Restlessness or loss of energy.
  • Feeling difficult in thinking or concentrating or making decisions.
  • Feeling of committing suicide.
  • Mood swings.

Cause: There may be several causes but some of them are discussed below:

  • Biological changes: The people having depression are having some physiological changes in the brain.
  • Neurotransmitter: These are naturally occurring brain chemical which play an important role in depression. The neurotransmitter are meant to be the person’s behaviour, his feelings, maintaing mood, anger and any other feelings.
  • Hormones: The secretion of hormones in hyper or hypo amount can trigger depression. From the weeks of pregnancy to postpartum pregnancy and menopause the hormones play as an important factor for depression.
  • Traits inherited: Whose blood relatives have the same conditions those care prone to have depression.
  • Addicted to drugs or alcohol.

  • Family support: Discussion with family and support of family is important step to avoid depression.
  • Psychotherapy: Counseling is needed as a part of treatment.
  • Medications: Anti depressant can help to treat moderate to severe type of depression.
  • Natural remedies: Herbal medicines can treat mild to moderate types. Ginseng a kind of traditional medication used to treat stress and improve mental health. Lavender is used to treat insomnia and anxiety. Supplements are also used to treat mild to moderate types.
